Have you ever felt tired, energy-less, with a sense of weariness? You’ve tried everything… sleeping, exercising, but nothing helps… Than it might be time to start juicing.
That’s exactly what I did. I was done feeling tired, exhausted, not knowing how to get over that feeling of lethargy. I wanted to be fit, energetic, playing with my kids, loving my hubby, feeling on top of my life, getting my things done.
A friend told me about Jason Vale’s documentary Super Juice Me and I watched it the next day. My life has never been the same again. Yes, I know, it sounds dramatic, but it’s so true.
Juicing changes lives
In his documentary Jason took 8 people, with together 22 diseases, on a juicing retreat for 28 days. Four weeks, just juice. His challenge was to show that chronic diseases are rooted in inflammation and that you can actually can cure them, if you change your diet. Here’s the short version. After 28 days most of their diseases where gone. People that could barely walk, started running half marathons. No more asthma pumps, suitcases full of medication, etc.
After I’d seen Super Juice Me I knew: I need to do this. I was concerned about my energy levels and my overall health. A good look in the mirror and at our eating patterns showed me we were not the most healthy family. My hubby and kids were highly addicted to sugar, and I didn’t know how to cook other than throwing packages in a pot :(. I desperately wanted to get rid of the pregnancy kilo’s (4 kiddies in 7 years adds up hey).
I got Jason’s 7 Lbs in 7 Days: The Juice Master Diet, and decided I was in for 7 days of detoxing! The title somehow doesn’t ring to well with me, ’cause I don’t like the ‘dieting’ thing. But I had to change my diet, that’s for sure.
After some research we got ourselves a juicer and got started.
We? Nope… me, myself and I. The rest of the family was not impressed. They actually thought I was a little crazy. ;-).
7 Days of juicing
The first two days were insane! My head was pounding, and I was seriously unimpressed with my obvious, but ignored, coffee addiction. We used to drink instant coffee (just the most affordable here in SA), but I realized what kind of crap it was. Terribly addictive. Is it really coffee? I was determined not to take any pain medications. If you do it, do it right :-).
After 3 days I started to feel better. My headaches left, and I got more energy.
The interesting thing is that I actually had more energy to exercise. My assumption was that if you don’t eat you don’t have enough energy, but the opposite was true. I felt like a power house. Exercising, working and lots of energy to play with my kids.
At the end of the week I felt over the moon. Even my hubby started commenting on my energy… oh my. I hadn’t felt so good in many years.
What juicing does
When you juice, you extract the fluids from the veggies and fruits. What remains is the pulp, the fibre. One of the misconceptions is that you loose a lot of healthiness of the fruit and veg if you do that. But with juicing you retain about 95% of all the nutrients. Your body takes them in very fast, straight to your cells, bypassing your digestive system.
Giving your digestive system a break every now and then is a good thing. Considering all the junk I’d put in, it was time to clean it out completely. Believe me, you feel different if your body is free of toxics!
Juicing reboots your taste buds. Amazing how well you taste after a week with just fruits and veggies, so much more intense.
An interesting observation for me, after 7 days of juicing, is that my tummy wasn’t bloated anymore. Dairy and I are not good friends, something I knew, but wilfully ignored.
Loosing 15 kg’s in one year.
We all know that loosing a lot of weight quickly is most likely not sustainable. In that first week I lost maybe 3 kg’s. Not very impressive. But here’s the cool thing. After one week of juicing I was not prepared to put junk in my body anymore. I had worked so hard for 7 days to discipline myself, and I felt great.
My taste buds had changed. I wanted leaves ;-). Flavours were more intense and I loved it. I started making salads for lunch, and adding juices and smoothies to my diet on regular bases.
I cut out my dairy as much as possible. Only when I drink coffee I’ll add some. It took me 4 months before I started drinking coffee again. I finally gave in because my hubby bought the most beautiful coffee machine and I didn’t want to miss out at our coffee dates. But I stuck to one cup a day – mostly.
We cut down on meat drastically. We eat meat maybe once a week.
Because I kept tweaking our families diet and add more and more leaves and beans, our families’ diet has changed.
Over the rest of the year I lost 15 kg’s! All my pregnancy kilo’s gone. Yay! For me that was a big deal!.
But the best part actually was the energy I gained.
My hubby became more interested in juicing. When I make juice, I made extra for him. Our kiddies jumped in as well. The trick? Let them help juicing, they love pressing down the veggies and see the juice come out.
It takes only 7 days of juicing
This year I did it again. I started my year with a detox.
It was fantastic. This time I wasn’t in it for loosing kilos. I don’t think I actually did.. maybe another 2? Instead I wanted the energy. And I wanted to know my body is clean! Free of toxics.
I’ve been talking with many people since I’ve done the detox. And I know it’s quite a challenge to take on. If you’re not keen for the full seven days, start with 3. Or 1. Or just one glass a day! Trust me, it will change your life too!
Ps. I would love to hear your thoughts on juicing. Have you tried? Any revelations? Put it in the comments below!
